Bottom line up front: The right questions separate excellent surgeons from mediocre ones. Here are the 12 questions that matter most — and what the good answers sound like.
Credentials and Experience
1. Are you certified by the SCCP or equivalent? In Colombia, look for SCCP membership (Sociedad Colombiana de CirugÃa Plástica) or equivalent hair transplant-specific certifications. Ask for the membership number and verify it independently.
2. How many hair transplant procedures do you perform per year? Surgeons who perform 200+ procedures annually have significantly more refined technique than those doing occasional transplants among other procedures. Volume matters in hair transplantation.
3. Do you personally extract and implant the grafts, or does a technician? In some high-volume clinics, technicians handle extraction and/or implantation while the surgeon oversees. This isn't necessarily bad — experienced technicians can be excellent — but you should know who's doing the work.
Your Specific Case
4. What's your graft count estimate for my case, and how did you arrive at that number? A detailed answer involving donor density assessment, recipient area measurement, and target density indicates thoroughness. A vague "about 3,000" without explanation is a yellow flag.
5. Which technique do you recommend for me, and why? FUE, DHI, or Sapphire each has strengths. A surgeon who recommends one without considering your specific hair type, loss pattern, and goals may be defaulting to what they're most comfortable with rather than what's best for you.
6. Can you show me before-and-after photos of patients with similar hair loss patterns to mine? This is the most important visual evidence you can evaluate. Look for patients with your hair type, your Norwood stage, and similar hair characteristics. Examine the hairline design and density.
The Procedure and Recovery
7. What's the expected graft survival rate with your technique? Good answer: 90–95%. If they claim 98–100%, they're overselling.
8. What does your aftercare protocol look like? Comprehensive clinics provide written aftercare instructions, medications, a post-op care kit, demonstration of the first hair wash, and direct contact (usually WhatsApp) for post-op questions.
9. What happens if I'm not satisfied with the results? Reputable surgeons discuss revision policies openly. Many offer complimentary touch-up procedures within 12 months if graft survival is below expected levels.
Logistics and Cost
10. What's included in the quoted price? Get an itemized breakdown. Beware quotes that exclude PRP, medications, follow-up visits, or accommodation.
11. What's the total graft count cap for a single session? Most surgeons cap at 4,000–5,000 grafts per session for quality and safety. "Mega sessions" promising 6,000+ in a single day often sacrifice graft quality.
12. How do I reach you after I return home? WhatsApp is standard in Colombia. Your surgeon should be directly reachable for post-op questions, photo check-ins, and any concerns — not just through a receptionist.
