PRP for Hair Loss in Colombia: What the Evidence Says, What It Costs

PRP — platelet-rich plasma — is the most popular non-surgical hair loss treatment worldwide. It's also one of the most debated. The evidence is promising but not definitive, and outcomes vary significantly between providers. Here's what the science actually says.

How PRP Works

A blood sample is drawn from your arm, centrifuged to concentrate the platelet-rich fraction, and injected into the scalp at hair loss sites. Platelets release growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, TGF-β) that theoretically stimulate hair follicle activity, extend the growth phase, and increase blood supply to follicles.

The Evidence

PRP for androgenetic alopecia is supported by Level 2 evidence — multiple small randomized controlled trials showing benefit, but lacking the large-scale definitive trials that would elevate it to Level 1.

A 2019 meta-analysis of 11 RCTs found that PRP increased hair density by an average of 33–35 hairs per cm² compared to placebo. That's meaningful but modest — visible to the patient but not dramatic.
