Hair Transplant Scars: FUE vs FUT and What to Expect

Bottom line up front: FUE leaves tiny, nearly invisible dot scars scattered across the donor area β€” you can wear your hair short without anyone noticing. FUT leaves a single linear scar that's hidden under longer hair. Both heal well with proper aftercare. If scarring concerns you, FUE or DHI is the clear choice.

FUE Scarring: The Modern Standard

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicular units using a micro-punch tool β€” typically 0.7–1.0mm in diameter. Each extraction site heals into a tiny dot scar that's virtually invisible to the naked eye, even with very short hair (buzz cut length). Thousands of these micro-scars spread across the donor area are far less noticeable than a single linear scar.

FUT Scarring: The Linear Tradeoff

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) removes a strip of scalp from the donor area, which is then dissected into individual grafts. This leaves a linear scar across the back of the head β€” typically 1–2mm wide after healing, stretching the width of the donor strip. With hair longer than about 1 inch, the scar is generally concealed. With a buzz cut or very short hair, it may be visible.

Why FUE Dominates in Colombia

The vast majority of Colombian clinics specialize in FUE and DHI rather than FUT. The preference is driven by patient demand (minimal scarring is the top priority for most patients), the versatility of FUE for both scalp and facial hair work, and advances in FUE technology (Sapphire blades, ARTAS robotics) that have closed the yield gap that once favored FUT.

Can Scars Be Fixed?

If you have a visible FUT scar from a previous hair transplant, FUE can be used to transplant individual follicles directly into the scar tissue β€” a technique called scar camouflage. This doesn't eliminate the scar entirely but significantly reduces its visibility. Several Colombian clinics specialize in scar revision for patients who had earlier FUT procedures elsewhere.

Considering a Transplant?

Modern FUE leaves virtually no visible scarring. Ask about technique options during your free consultation.
