Setup & Lighting
Natural daylight or bright overhead lighting (not backlit). Camera at head height for profile shots; have someone stand behind you to shoot the top-down. Avoid flash (creates harsh shadows that hide or exaggerate thinning). Plain, light-colored background. Phone camera is fine — no special equipment needed.
Hair State
Take photos with dry, unstyled hair — no product, no combing to cover thin areas, no hat-hair compression. Some surgeons also request wet-hair photos (hair slicked back with water to fully expose the scalp) — these show the true extent of thinning without hair volume creating an illusion of density. If you can provide both dry and wet photos, your surgeon gets the most complete picture.
Pro Tips
Include a photo of your full face (for hairline design proportions). If you have old photos showing your hair before loss began, include them — they help the surgeon understand your natural hairline position and density. Note your age, when hair loss began, and any medications you've tried or are currently using. And don't try to hide the loss — your surgeon needs to see the full extent to plan accurately.
