Beard transplant has grown into a well-established procedure in its own right, using the same core extraction and implantation technology as scalp hair transplant, adapted for the different density and direction requirements of facial hair.
How it works
Follicles are extracted from the scalp donor area (the same source used for standard hair transplant) and implanted into the beard area following your desired density and growth pattern — DHI's precise angle control (see our FUE vs. DHI guide) is particularly well-suited to this application, since facial hair direction varies noticeably across different areas of the face.
Beard hair and scalp hair have somewhat different growth characteristics — an experienced surgeon accounts for this in graft placement and density planning rather than treating it as an identical procedure to scalp work.
Common goals patients bring to this procedure
- Filling patchy areas within an existing beard
- Building denser overall beard coverage for patients with naturally sparse facial hair growth
- Camouflaging scarring in the beard area from a prior injury or procedure
Recovery
Beard transplant recovery generally follows a similar pattern to scalp transplant recovery, though the smaller treatment area often means a somewhat shorter overall procedure time. See our recovery timeline guide for the general framework.
Combining with a scalp transplant
Beard and scalp transplants are frequently combined in a single trip — see our combination guide for how donor-area planning works when both are done together.
